Fall 2010

GHSA Competition is Underway !

As you know, the GHSA competitive season has started!

Hopefully, your pre-season practices have gone well and your team is in the early stages of performing and perfecting their routine.

As we all travel around to various host schools, it is a great time to continue the work of promoting sportsmanship in cheerleading.

“Good Sportsmanship is defined as conduct which promotes fairness, respect for one’s opponents, and graciousness in winning and losing.”

Three simple things you can have your girls practice during the competitive season to foster and promote good sportsmanship.

1. Learn your host’s name.  Each school assigns one or two of their cheerleaders to “help” your team throughout the day.  Learn her/his name!
2. After your girls have competed, make sure that they are paying attention to the other team’s that are still competing.  Simply watching, clapping, and yelling with/for the teams — goes such a long way to show great sportsmanship.
3. Everyone wants to be announced as the winner, but that can’t happen each Saturday.  Teach your team to clap for other teams as they receive their awards.  Teach your girls to congratulate the winning teams at the conclusion of the competition.

Three simple steps that will lay down a foundation toward good sportsmanship!

Georgia UCA State Director

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself to you (or reintroduce myself to you).  I was the UCA State Director from 2001-2007.  From 2007-present I have been managing Varsity Brands’ Choreography Company—V!ROC.  I will continue in that role, BUT am glad to be back on the UCA side as well !! I’m excited and  thankful to be working with the Georgia High School coaches again !!

I have been  coaching for 21 years — hard to even type  a number that large.  For the first 17 years I coached at the college level — George Mason University (Fairfax, VA) and then the University of West Georgia (Carrollton, GA).  For the past 4 years I have been coaching at Carrollton High School and truly enjoying the community of coaches and camaraderie around the state.  We are a very lucky group of coaches to have a State Association that works so hard for us and our Sport.  I recently had the privilege and pleasure of coaching Team USA’s All-Girl team to a Gold medal at the International Cheer Union’s World Championship in April in Orlando, Florida.

If I can be a resource for you, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I am happy to help you in any way that I can.  Good luck to everyone with the GHSA Competitive season and good luck to everyone’s football teams!!!!

CHEERS,

Sherry Cooney
