Staff Puts on Free Camp in MS
Ten years ago Deshea Townsend, defensive back for the Pittsburgh Steelers, wanted to give something back to his community, so he started hosting football clinics for youth players at South Panola High School in Batesville, Mississippi, his alma mater. The program is a daylong training session that teaches youth kids the fundamentals of football. Deshea started this program in the hopes of expanding the community and health services.
Over the last ten years, the program has drawn a lot of youth boys to the one-day clinic. This year, hundreds of boys attended the camp, but they didn’t want to limit it just to boys—they wanted the camp to involved girls, too. This year, there was also one day cheerleading camp to coincide with the football camp.
Universal Cheerleaders Association volunteered three of their best instructors to teach the camp, including Adam Mahoney, Holly Osborne and Brooke Sibley.
“Having cheerleaders as part of the clinic added a whole new level of excitement for the community,” says Sheila Noone. “The girls were thrilled to be there and learn the basics of cheerleading.”
UCA wants to offer a big “Thanks” to Deshea Townsend for starting this amazing program and involving UCA in such a big way!
